MODULE INFORMATION BRIEF (MIB)

LECTURE NOTE

Core principles and composition techniques of visual design

1. Focal Point
Like the "protagonist" in the picture, the focal point guides the audience's eyes to the most critical position, helping the viewer to see the center of gravity of the information at a glance.
2. Scale & Hierarchy
• Scale is not just decoration, it conveys the importance and priority of information.
• Important elements can be enlarged, while minor elements can be reduced to form a natural visual navigation path.
3. Balance of Elements
• Imagine that each image element has "weight":
• Large graphics > small icons
• Textured > flat color blocks
• A harmonious picture is that each element can "support each other" visually, without bias and landing steadily.
4. The power of white space
• White space is not a waste of space, but a breathing space for complex content.
• It improves the clarity of the design, makes the subject more prominent, and makes the overall look more comfortable.
5. Rule of Thirds
• Divide the picture into a nine-square grid with two horizontal lines and two vertical lines.
• Putting important elements at the intersection makes it more natural and balanced visually, and it is easy to catch the audience's attention.
Benefits of the Rule of Thirds:
• A composition method that is close to the natural preference of the human eye
• Make good use of "negative space" (blank area) to create contrast
• Create a sense of dialogue between the subject and the background, and increase the tension of the picture
6. Golden Ratio
• Derived from the Fibonacci sequence, the ratio is 1:1.618, and is commonly seen in natural beauty such as petals, shells, and human bodies.
• In design, it represents:
• Organic harmony
• Visually natural and pleasing
• Can be used as an important reference for layout
Composition in Film

1. Single Shot
• Clean Single: There is only one person in the picture, with a clear focus
• Dirty Single: Although other people appear partially, the protagonist is still the only focus
2. Two Shot
• Two characters appear in the picture at the same time, often used to show the relationship between characters and the tension of interaction
3. Over the Shoulder
• Common in dialogue scenes, emphasizing communication and perspective relationships.
4. Point of View
• Let the audience observe the world from the perspective of the character, which is more immersive and involved
5. Insert Shot
• Used to highlight important details, such as text on the phone, objects in hand, specific expressions, etc., to strengthen narrative and emotional cues

PRE-COMPOSITION

INSTRUCTION:

1. Choose and identify your collage's design elements to be cut out and compose it into your own

concept & story.

2. Pre compositing your collage's design elements into a composition.

Reference: https:/ /youtu.be/2KqXGMf0HNk

3. Take 3 photo of your collage pre-composition and insert it on the section below. Please use

CAMSCANNER apps to take pictures of your collages.

PRE-COMPOSITION #1

Concept:
The space travel story with "cat" as the protagonist is a metaphor for the journey of modern
people to overcome loneliness and find true love. The universe symbolizes infinite possibilities, and
"Somebody to love" is a projection of the soul's desire.
The space background is combined with retro elements (classic cars, metal stars, neon
letters) to create a contrast of "alien narrative + inner growth". It also symbolizes the loneliness of
modern people in the hustle and bustle - you may be a "superstar", but your heart still longs to be
truly understood and cherished.

Interpretation of visual elements:
• Cat sitting in the spaceship: It is the protagonist, representing a lonely free soul
• "SPACE SHIP": external exploration, but also internal search
• Saturn, starry sky, clouds: symbolize dreams and transcendence of reality
• Convertible classic car: retro romance, forming a time collision with the cat's future spaceship
"superstar": "You are the star in your universe", emphasizing self-worth
• Butterfly: transformation and hope
• Thunder and lightning: inner conflict and awakening

PRE-COMPOSITION #2

Concept:

This is a "rock memorial post" that mixes text paper-cuts, musical symbols, colorful letters

and retro visual symbols (vinyl, old TVs). It uses red and black metal tones with thunder symbols to

create a restless and free atmosphere, telling how music awakens the soul.

The black cat symbolizes mystery and rebellion, and can also be understood as the creator's

self-avatar - hiding behind the screen, sending out its own frequency through music and content, and

not defined by the mainstream. What this work wants to express is "You don't have to stand in the

center of the stage, but you have your own sound field", just like a midnight cat broadcast.

Using cats as soul symbols and music as a communication language, explore the inner

world of lonely artists.

Interpretation of visual elements:

• Electric guitar, musical notes, vinyl records: concrete sounds that symbolize artistic creation and

emotions

• Black cat sitting on TV: a representative of modern loneliness, staring at the human world outside

the screen

• "Super" spelling style mix: expressing multiple selves and mixing life

• Black star, lightning: rock rebellion and emotional current

PRE-COMPOSITION #3

Concept:

The healing journey is composed of childhood images, retro objects and blue tones,

exploring the theme of "self-return".This is a gentle postcard for everyone who feels lost and longs to

be seen.

The telephone and the tape symbolize connection - not only the connection between people,

but also the connection between "my past self" and "my present self". When we feel lost in the real

world, the real guidance does not necessarily come from the outside world, but from the self who

still believes in dreams and love in the past.

Interpretation of visual elements:

• Clouds and blue sky: symbolize freedom and spiritual space

• Hot air balloons and lighthouses: navigation guidance and self-awakening

• Blue telephones and tapes: voices from the past, old concerns

• Stuffed bears and teacups: childhood sense of security

• Butterflies and flowers: healing and regeneration

• "Call me if you get lost": the core message is the call of love and the reconstruction of a sense of

direction

FEEDBACK

Week 2: The alien cat is very strange, and the layout is also good. It can be regarded as the first sketch. Week 3: mr fauzi likes the second sketch more. Whether it is the color combination or the lightning that highlights the guitar, it makes the picture more layered.
