1. The dialogue between materials creates narrative tension
From the guitar, record, black cat, etc. cut from the magazine, each
picture is like a character. When piecing them together, I learned
to "tell a little story" instead of just piling up beautiful things.
2. Combining pictures and texts to enhance the expressiveness of
visual language
I tried to express my attitude with words such as "Super" combined
with images, and found that the combination of pictures and texts
can be more tense and more personal.
3. Hands-on collage is a kind of "flow creation"
The process of cutting, pasting, and combining is very relaxing and
focused. I learned to find the joy of expression in the imperfect
manual process, and I also trust my intuitive aesthetics more.
Combining realistic elements (high-rise buildings, subways)
with dream images (huge fighting fish) can create
psychological contrast and conflict in the picture. I learned
to use collage to express abstract emotions, such as
"loneliness" and "desire for freedom".
2. The rhythm of the picture needs to be guided by
composition
The tilt of high-rise buildings, the rush of trains, and the
flowing background textures all made me understand the power
of "dynamic composition". The picture does not have to be
balanced, and sometimes "imbalance" can convey tension.
3. The importance of color tonality and emotional
consistency
The orange-red background forms a strong contrast with the
blue-green fish. I learned to use color collision to
strengthen the presence of the protagonist and make the
emotions more prominent visually.
PART 1B: Digital Imaging Exercises
PROJECT 1B- DIGITAL IMAGING EXERCISES 1
PHOTO MANIPULATION (HEARST MANSION)
1. Character integration is not only a technique, but also a
narrative
Putting the character into such a luxurious, symmetrical, deep
blue reflective space, I realized that the existence of the
character is not just "being put in", but to think about the
relationship between the character and the space. This character
in red seems to be the only living being in this picture. His
posture, color and position give the whole picture a story.
2. Light and reflection need to be imagined in advance
The reflection of the pool water in this picture is very clear
and realistically reflects the geometric structure of the space.
When the character is integrated into it, I must consider how
his reflection naturally appears on the water surface, otherwise
it will destroy the overall sense of reality. This made me
understand the logic of light and shadow and the law of
perspective more deeply.
PROJECT 1B - DIGITAL IMAGING EXERCISE 2 Recoloring Black & White
Color is not only a visual
supplement, but also a re-creation of emotions, temperament and
character personality.
In the process of coloring black and
white photos, I realized that the lightness and darkness of each
skin color, the coldness and warmth of hair color, and the choice of
background tones will directly affect the atmosphere and inner
tension conveyed by the characters.
Color is not just a restoration of
reality, but a re-interpretation - turning a portrait that was
originally static and detached into an existence with emotions,
stories and warmth.
This process made me understand the
language of color better, and also more keenly grasp "how to
resonate psychologically with the viewer through color".
REFLECTION
In
the past period of time, I have been practicing creation through
various media and image forms: including digital collage, handmade
collage, integrating characters into scenes, and experiments in
coloring black and white photos. Different styles, media and
techniques have given me a deeper perception and understanding of "the
emotions, rhythm and narrative power behind the image" in the process
of visual expression.
About collage creation-structural awareness behind freedom
In the handmade collage "Rock Collage Paradise", the sense of
dialogue between each pattern and the combination of text and images
taught me how to tell stories with fragments, and also reawakened my
original passion for "hands-on creation".
In the digital collage "City·Dream of Fish", I tried to combine real
buildings with surreal images (fighting fish) to express the desire
for freedom in urban repression. This made me realize that even a
seemingly "mixed" collage needs the guidance of structural logic and
emotional rhythm.
About the integration of characters into the scene - composition is
the theater of emotions
Placing characters in the magnificent swimming pool space, I learned
not only the synthesis technology, but also the sensitivity to the
"relationship between characters and fields". Corners, standing
postures, light and shadow, and tones all silently convey the mood of
the characters. Composition is not about arranging a position, but
creating a theater where emotions can flow.
About black and white to color - color is the second face of the
character
Coloring the characters from three black and white portraits is a
process of reconstructing the temperament of the characters. The
warmth and coldness of the skin color, the saturation of the lip
color, and the brightness of the background, every decision affects
the psychological feelings of the viewer. I realized that color is not
only a visual fill, but also a language for emotional projection,
character reshaping and atmosphere construction.
This process also made me cherish the "measurement of color" more -
not too much, not too little, just the point that can tell the story
of the character.
