Adjustment layers
⸻
1. The concept of adjustment layer:
Adjustment layer = a
magic weapon for photo editing without damaging the original image
•
It is like a "transparent filter" added to the image. You can adjust the
color and brightness without destroying the pixels of the original
image.
• It can be modified / canceled at any time, very
flexible.
⸻
2. Common adjustment layer types:
• Brightness / Contrast
- Simple and quick adjustment of the overall
brightness and contrast intensity of the picture.
- Just like
adding a light or pulling a curtain.
• Levels
- Optimize the
brightness and darkness of the image by adjusting "dark part / midtone /
highlight".
- Similar to using a pull bar to control the black,
gray and white ratio of the picture.
• Curves
- Advanced
gameplay, you can freely set multiple adjustment points within the
entire brightness range to more finely control the brightness and
darkness contrast of the image.
- Just like using a paintbrush to
adjust light and shadow, there are not only three levels, but continuous
adjustment.
• Exposure
- Allows you to fine-tune the
brightness of the picture accurately, mainly through three sliders:
-
Exposure (overall exposure)
- Offset (brighten or darken the dark
part)
- Gamma (midtone adjustment)
• Selective Colour
-
Precisely control the proportion of a certain color (for example, only
adjust the concentration of red without affecting blue),
- Suitable
for color stylization, such as retro yellow, movie green, etc.
⸻
Filter
Filter = "special effects processor" of image
• Used to add blur,
deformation, sharpening, artistic style, and even create completely
different visual effects.
• Photoshop has built-in various filter
tools that can turn an ordinary photo into an art poster, sketch or
dreamy landscape.
⸻
Analogy:
• Adjustment layers are like
adding an "adjustable filter" to a photo:
- Switch, modify, and
undo at any time without changing the original image.
• Filters are
like "magic wands for special effects"
