LECTURE NOTE

Color Theory
Color theory is the science and art of how colors are perceived by humans and how colors convey information artistically and emotionally. It helps designers and artists convey emotions and concepts more effectively.

Color Mode: RGB vs CMYK
• RGB
Full name : Red, Green, Blue
Purpose : Screen display
Principle : Additive light (additive color)
Common applications : TV, computer, projector

• CMYK
Full name : Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black
Purpose : Printing
Principle : Subtractive light (subtractive color)
Common applications : Printing, magazines, posters

Basic color terms
• Hue: the name of the color (such as red, blue, green)
• Shade: adding black to the hue
• Tint: adding white to the hue
• Tone: adding gray to the hue (black + white)

Color Harmony
•  Analogous: Three colors that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel—Harmony and unity
•  Complementary: Two colors that are directly opposite each other on the color wheel—Strong contrast and eye-catching
•  Split Complementary: Main color + two adjacent colors opposite each other—Balanced contrast
•  Triadic: Three colors that are evenly distributed on the color wheel—Vivid, active, balanced
•  Monochromatic: The light and dark changes of a hue—A sense of unity, elegance, not monotonous

Psychology of Colour
Color has a significant impact on emotions, and different colors will trigger different psychological reactions:

Warm colors (red, orange, yellow):
Energy, happiness, optimism, sometimes also represent warnings—Advertisements, reminders, restaurants
• Cold colors (blue, green, purple):
Calm, calm, melancholy, imagination—Health, technology, art
Black:
Mysterious, elegant, strong—High fashion, formal occasions
White:
Clean, pure, healthy—Medical, simple design
Summary
• RGB is used for screen display, CMYK is used for printing output
• Hue is hue, Shade is blackening, Tint is whitening, Tone is graying
• Different color combinations can create different atmospheres and visual tensions
• Colors have emotional meanings, and their psychological effects should be considered when designing

PRACTICAL

Sketches

I went through three stages of draft adjustments: hand-drawn line drawing, digital sketch, and the final complete image.

⸻ Phase 1: Hand-drawn line drawing (Sketch #1) • This is the initial composition draft, which is hand-drawn with black lines. • Focusing on people and natural elements, including flowers, grass and butterflies, lines are used to establish visual structure and rhythm. • The main goal of this stage is to explore the distribution of the center of gravity and theme elements of the picture. No color and material are added, only focusing on the "contour sense". ⸻ Phase 2: Digital sketch (Sketch #2) • After entering the computer drawing, I retained the original element structure, but added real people's photos as the protagonists, replacing the hand-drawn character outlines. • Color began to intervene: black was used to create contrast in the background, and yellow starlight was used to increase the sense of layering and dreamy atmosphere. • Flowers and butterflies began to have color processing, but the overall composition was still experimental, and it was a stage used to test the atmosphere and color matching logic.

DEVELOPMENT

After finishing the draft, I felt that the picture was too empty, so I finally decided to use textures to better present the effect, and incorporated some hand-painted parts.

This is a simple cut and collage version of the background:
