Title: Halloween Cat in a Pumpkin

Mood-Board

This illustration focuses on creating a playful and slightly spooky atmosphere, capturing the essence of Halloween through bright colors, iconic symbols and expressive characters.

· Concept and Theme

The core concept revolves around "cute horror", with classic Halloween themes such as pumpkins, ghosts and graveyards presented in a whimsical style. The white cat in the carved pumpkin symbolizes curiosity and innocence in a spooky atmosphere, creating a humorous and warm contrast effect rather than a scary one.

· Color Scheme and Atmosphere

The purple-black gradient background creates a twilight atmosphere, enhancing the mysterious atmosphere. The warm tones of the orange pumpkin and the yellow candlelight create a cozy and magical balance. The contrast between cool and warm tones enriches the visual depth while maintaining visual clarity and focusing on the central theme.

· Composition and Elements

• The cat in the pumpkin is the visual focal point, instantly attracting the audience's attention.

• Surrounding elements such as ghosts, bats, grave crosses and candies add narrative layers and details, making the piece dynamic and storytelling.

• The asymmetrical balance, placement of the ghosts and the background silhouette create a dynamic composition.

· Message & Target Audience

This piece aims to portray Halloween as an opportunity to explore fun, use imagination and play, rather than a holiday to be feared. It is particularly suitable for younger audiences or those who like a cute aesthetic with seasonal elements

Techniques Applied

What are the techniques you learned in class that you have applied in your works?
In this work, I used many skills learned in class, including character illustration design, composition level arrangement, and coordinated application of color matching. I applied the visual focus arrangement and foreground and background depth of field concepts taught in class to the picture, making the main character cat and pumpkin lantern the visual center, while matching the background silhouette and gradient colors to create the atmosphere of Halloween night.

In the animation part, I used After Effects to create basic dynamic effects, such as floating objects, flickering candlelight, and slight movement of characters. These are the basic animation operations we have been exposed to in class, such as keyframe, opacity and position control.

Did you include additional techniques that you researched on your own?
In addition, I also taught myself some additional techniques to enrich the performance of the work, such as using easing to make the animation transition more natural, and using layer masks and glow effects to enhance the atmosphere. I also referred to the practice of "looping motion" on the Internet to make the ghost's floating smoother and less abrupt.

Overall, this assignment allowed me to actually integrate the techniques I learned in class and additional research, from static characters to dynamic narratives, and then to product applications, to form a complete and extensible creative result.

REFLECTION

In this homework, my favorite part is to extend the Halloween illustration characters I designed to different media, not only applying them to the physical product, but also trying to make animated videos. This is the first time that I have experienced the process of a character from a flat image to a complete work with vitality.

What did you like the most in the assignment?

When applying it to cups, mobile phone cases, suitcases and other products, seeing your character "enter" daily necessities brings a strong sense of accomplishment and visual consistency.

The animation production part is the part that I enjoy the most. Use After Effects to add dynamic effects such as ghost fluttering, background gradient, etc. to make the whole picture more vibrant. After the static illustration becomes a dynamic picture, the character seems to be "alive", which is an experience that static design cannot bring.

What can be improves based on your submission?

When the details of illustrations are reduced, it is also necessary to strengthen the clarity to meet the printing needs. In animation, some transitions are slightly stiff. In the future, smoother motion effects and sound elements can be added, such as cat calls, wind or candlelight, which will make the work more complete and vivid.

On the whole, this homework gave me a more comprehensive experience of the complete creative process from illustration to animation to product extension, and also made me realize the importance of visual unity and dynamic expression, which is very helpful for my future design practice.
