Exercise 3: Kinetic Typography
This exercise was done as a group project where we created a kinetic typography animation based on a song. Each member was assigned a different part of the lyrics, and I was responsible for verse 2. For my part, I focused on creating a strong visual impact using bold typography, glitch effects, and high contrast colors such as red, black, and white to match the intense mood of the song.
During the process, I experimented with different animation techniques such as scaling, position shifts, and distortion to make the text feel more dynamic and expressive. I also layered multiple text elements to create a sense of movement and chaos, especially in words like “lyrics” and “animal.” Timing was an important aspect, so I adjusted the keyframes carefully to sync with the rhythm and beat of the music.
Through this project, I learned how collaboration works in motion design and how each part needs to be visually consistent while still having its own identity. This exercise helped me improve my understanding of typography in motion and how design choices can enhance emotion and storytelling.
Exercise 4: Weather Forecast
For this exercise, I created an animated chart to present data visually. I designed a bar chart showing different music categories from my Spotify playlists. Using After Effects, I animated the bars to grow over time and added smooth transitions to make the data easier to understand. I also paid attention to color contrast and layout so the chart looks clear and visually appealing. This project helped me understand how animation can make information more engaging and easier to communicate compared to static charts.
Exercise 5: Vector Animation
This week, I practised vector and character animation using the artwork provided by the lecturer. First, I used Adobe Illustrator to separate all elements into different layers, such as the mountains, trees, car, and characters, so they could be animated individually.
Then, I imported the file into After Effects and added motion by making the mountains and trees appear from bottom to top, while the car moves from left to right. This process helped me understand how to organise layers and create simple but effective animation.
REFLECTION
For Exercise 3, I found it quite challenging at first because it was a group project and we had to make sure everyone’s part looked consistent. While working on my verse, I tried different effects like glitch and distortion to match the mood of the song. Sometimes it felt a bit messy, but after adjusting the timing and keyframes, everything started to feel more in sync with the music. This exercise made me realize that kinetic typography is not just about moving text, but about expressing emotion through motion.
For Exercise 4, the process felt more structured because it was based on data. Compared to static charts, I could see how animation makes the information more engaging and easier to follow. I also became more aware of how important timing and smooth transitions are, because if the animation is too fast or too slow, it affects how people understand the data.
For Exercise 5, the process was quite straightforward and smooth. Separating the layers in Illustrator was simple, and it made the animation in After Effects easier to manage. Once everything was imported, I just needed to apply basic movements like the mountains and trees appearing from bottom to top, and the car moving from left to right. Although the animation was simple, it still looked clean and effective. This exercise helped me understand how organizing layers properly can make the whole workflow much more efficient.
